The Heart of England
Where is it? Right there at the very heart of the country, sometimes known as the Midlands. It’s an incredibly varied region, which has been much fought over throughout history, so there are plenty of battlefields and castles, weaponry and armour as well as more peaceful artefacts such as pottery and paintings.
Visit Stratford-upon-Avon with its Shakespeare connections and Blenheim Palace a UNESCO world heritage site and the only non-royal palace outside London. Other highlights of the region include Oxford, the home of the first university in the English speaking world and Gloucester with its 15th Century, perpendicular style cathedral, both of which were used as locations for some of the Harry Potter films. For industrial history, visit Ironbridge in Coalbrookdale, which was the cradle of the industrial revolution and where you can see the world’s first iron bridge, or the Potteries in Stoke on Trent, which feature in the C4 show “The Great Pottery Throw Down.”
Our region is also home to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, as well as several areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONBs), including the Malverns, The Cotswolds and the Shropshire Hills.
Coventry UK City of Culture 2021
Coventry, once one of the most important cities in England has a long history of reinventing itself. The Phoenix, a mythical creature which rises, reborn from its ashes is shown on the modern coat of arms alongside the black eagle of Earl Leofric, the husband of Lady Godiva. With its iconic modern cathedral integrated with the ruins of the cathedral destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, its many medieval buildings, the history of watchmaking, bicycles and British road transport and being the home of two-tone music there are attractions to cater for all tastes.
The main events start with Coventry Moves on 15th May 2021.

Birmingham, England’s 2nd City is proud to be the host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This is the third time that England has hosted the games and for the first time in the Games’ History, there are more medal events for women than for men and there is a fully-integrated para-sport programme. Birmingham will host many of the events but some will be held in other parts of the wider region, including Coventry, Royal Leamington Spa and Cannock Chase.
The opening Ceremony for this event is on the 28 July 2022
